Hands on Ceramic Workshop featuring Julia Burns
Come spend an evening making a Llama Planter!
Time & Location
Mar 13, 2024, 5:30 PM – 8:30 PM
LEAD, 308 Clairemont Ave, Decatur, GA 30030, USA
About the event
Ceramic enthusiasts of all skill levels are invited to spend an evening of handbuilding with Julia Burns as you make a Llama Planter. All supplies (clay and tools) will be provided. Completed Llamas will be bisque fired and glazed and will be available for pick up at a later date. At that time, you will also be able to choose a plant from our mini greenhouse to complete your creation.
Attention Families! This family friendly event encourages children to work with adults on creating a smaller Llama. There will be STEAM activities involving Hexbugs, Spheros and other robots in an adjoining room for elementary and middle school aged children in case their attention wanders! Each adult making a Llama will need to register for the event—any children that may be interested in working with you will be provided with additional clay. Maximum of two children per registration.
About the Instructor
Julia Burns is a Georgia native with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics. Growing up in a creative household, art was just the way of life for her. After dabbling in many mediums she connected with clay. Realizing her passion for clay she decided to study ceramics further at Georgia State University where she completed a BFA in Ceramics in 2015.
After college, Julia was awarded a studio assistant position at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. Where she focused on atmospheric firings, including soda and salt. Since 2016 she has  been teaching hand-building and ceramic sculpture classes at Callanwolde. Specializing in animal sculpture, she continues to teach classes as well as workshops including raku and saggar firing.  Julia has also taught pottery at Abernathy Art Center,  South Fulton Art Center and is currently teaching at Emory Oxford college.
Julia’s work has been featured at the Booth Western Art Museum (Cartersville, GA). While her work was exhibited there she presented an artist lecture. You can also find her work at the DK Gallery (Marietta, GA), Beverly McNeil Gallery (Birmingham, AL), Plough Gallery (Tifton, GA) and shows at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center (Atlanta, GA).
