2024 ELECTION Thursdays 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Teacher: Marilyn McGinnis Course Cost: $300 Course Duration: 12 weeks (Note: Class will not meet 9/26; Last Day of Class 12/12) Ages: 12+ Class will objectively examine the candidates and the issues at play in the November 2024 election. Course Description: From the presidential race to the state and local races, this class will objectively examine the candidates and the issues at play in the November, 2024 election. Using the November, 2024 election as context, this class will familiarize students with the electoral process, the roles and responsibilities of each office that is on the ballot, the major candidates for each office, and the issues that are most in play in the major races. If possible, we will take one field trip to an early voting location and perhaps one to a candidate's local field office to learn what is involved in running a campaign. After the election on November 5, we will examine what the results tell us about voters' concerns and priorities and learn about the transition process for newly elected leaders. Throughout the course, we will discuss how the media presents each candidate and race and how to determine if sources are reliable. Students will be expected to read and post news articles or videos each week about election issues that are most interesting to them and to comment on classmates' postings on our class discussion board. Furthermore, students will be expected to participate in class discussions in an honest and respectful way and thoughtfully consider opinions that may differ from their own.
