THURSDAY 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM Cost: $245 + $30 Supply Fee + $30 LEAD Registration Fee Duration: 15 Weeks All Ages Course Description: "The only power I have is the power to persuade." -- Lyndon Baines Johnson Have you ever had trouble writing an essay, doing a presentation in front of a large group of people, or just trying to convince people to join your cause? The skills that you will learn in this course have countless applications in real life, and will help prepare you to conquer your stage fright, to learn the differences between logos, ethos and pathos, and to make your case, whatever it may be, in the most effective way that you can. In this introductory course, we'll be learning about several types of Speech and Debate events, from Impromptu to Extemporaneous speaking, Original Interpretation (OI), Original Prose and Poetry (OPP), Humorous Interpretation (HI), Dramatic Interpretation (DI), Parliamentary Debate, Policy Debate, Lincoln Douglas Debate, etc. We will focus on the Speech and Debate formats that students prefer to learn and eventually, compete in. Finally, students who join this course will exercise a very useful intellectual muscle when they are assigned to argue policy positions at random. This will help students gain a better understanding of different perspectives, and it will also help students better anticipate counter-arguments whenever they may come up, both in tournaments and in real life.
