INTRO TO DOUMBEK Mondays 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM Teacher: Melissa Kacalanos Course Cost: $255 Course Duration: 12 weeks Ages: 7+ (see course description for details) Learn to play traditional rhythms on doumbek, a drum popular in the Middle East and Balkans. Course Description: The doumbek is a goblet-shaped hand drum. In this class, students will learn how to produce different tones from a doumbek, and use these tones to play rhythms useful for accompanying melodies. While we’re at it, we’ll learn about meter, syncopation, and dynamics, important elements for any musician. We’ll work towards a performance during the last class, when we’ll show off what we’ve learned. Any student capable of focusing and not being disruptive is welcome. Materials needed: Drums provided for class. Students should have a drum to practice on at home. If they don’t have a doumbek, some other hand drum capable of producing both low and high sounds will do.
