Systems Thinking & Problem Solving
Details
Systems Thinking & Problem Solving Thursdays, 11-11:55 AM Teacher: John Menard. john@kifol.io pxmethod.github.io/systems-thinking-class-overview/ Course Cost: $200 Course Duration: 15 weeks Age: 9-18 This course introduces students ages 9+ to systems thinking—the ability to understand how parts of a system interact, influence one another, and produce real-world outcomes. Students will learn to analyze complex problems, identify stakeholders and incentives, recognize unintended consequences, and design thoughtful solutions. The first session establishes foundational concepts and vocabulary, while subsequent classes operate as hands-on design challenges where students work in teams to solve real-world problems ranging from school systems and community challenges to technology, cities, and global issues. Systems thinking is increasingly recognized as one of the most important skills for the future. Modern challenges—whether in technology, business, science, or civic life—are rarely solved through memorization or single correct answers. Instead, success requires critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and the ability to frame problems clearly before attempting solutions. This class emphasizes process over perfection: students practice research, structured reasoning, teamwork, and communication through presentations and debates at the end of each session. By the end of the semester, students will gain confidence in tackling complex problems, communicating ideas effectively, and thinking like designers, engineers, and leaders. The course blends elements of design thinking, strategy, and collaborative learning to help students develop lifelong skills applicable across academic subjects and real-world decision making. Learning goals Students will learn to: - Break down complex problems - Identify stakeholders - Map systems and relationships - Recognize incentives and feedback loops - Prototype solutions - Communicate reasoning clearly
